DJI Dock 4 and Matrice 5TD: What 25-Second Battery Swaps Change

DJI Dock 4 and Matrice 5TD: What 25-Second Battery Swaps Change

Dock 4 swaps a battery in under 25 seconds, while Matrice 5TD combines 59-minute endurance, thermal imaging, LiDAR and mmWave radar.

DJI Dock 4 changes more than charging speed: it changes how an autonomous drone operation can be scheduled. After Matrice 5TD lands, the dock swaps its battery in under 25 seconds. In controlled conditions, the full turnaround from landing to the next takeoff takes less than 45 seconds. That matters for site security, alarm response and inspections that cannot wait for a conventional charging cycle.

The key change: previous generations waited while the aircraft battery charged. Dock 4 stores up to three batteries, charges two in parallel and installs a ready battery in the aircraft.

Why can 25 seconds matter more than another minute of flight?

Long endurance covers more ground, but urgent operations also depend on time spent on the ground. Matrice 5TD offers up to 59 minutes of flight and can return to the mission less than a minute after landing. This creates more useful workflows for industrial security, search operations, wildfire monitoring, power inspections and automated mapping.

The dock has four battery compartments, but no more than three may contain batteries while the swapping mechanism operates. It charges two batteries at the same time; at 25 °C, charging one battery from 15 to 95 percent takes about 27 minutes. The result is not literally endless flight. It is a system designed for tightly scheduled consecutive missions.

DJI Matrice 5TD: one aircraft for daylight, night and thermal work

Matrice 5TD combines three 50 MP visible cameras, a 1280 × 1024 thermal camera, a laser rangefinder reaching up to 3 km, LiDAR, mmWave radar and six-directional vision sensing. The 252 mm equivalent tele camera resolves distant details, while the thermal camera supports temperature measurement, fault detection and night operations.

Capability DJI Dock 4 / Matrice 5TD Operational value
Battery swap Under 25 s A very short break between consecutive missions
Operational turnaround Under 45 s Faster redeployment after landing
Maximum flight time Up to 59 min More coverage with fewer interruptions
Thermal camera 1280 × 1024 at 30 Hz More detail for inspection and search tasks
Obstacle sensing Vision, LiDAR and mmWave radar More dependable flight near wires, structures and at night
Accessories Up to three devices, 450 g total Use a spotlight, speaker or parachute together

What changes from Dock 3 and Matrice 4TD?

Dock 4 replaces the conventional wait for aircraft charging with automatic battery swapping. Its operating range expands to –40 to 50 °C, while video transmission and RTK are connected through the external DJI O4 Ground Station. The system also supports high-speed Wi-Fi media transfer, and batteries stored in the dock can provide backup power.

Compared with Matrice 4TD, Matrice 5TD adds longer endurance, higher thermal resolution, an 11× tele camera, built-in dual 4G modules, LiDAR and mmWave radar. Onboard AI can identify 17 object types in real time, while FlightHub 2 can issue alerts and trigger automated actions.

Built for demanding sites

Dock 4 operates from –40 to 50 °C, carries an IP56 rating and supports landing in winds up to 12 m/s. Matrice 5TD has the same operating temperature range, reaches up to 21 m/s in supported FlyTo tasks and includes dual 4G modules. The separate O4 Ground Station provides more freedom to position the antenna at sites where buildings or industrial structures obstruct the direct link.

C5, C6 and additional safety

Matrice 5TD is certified in the EU as C5 and C6. It supports a Flight Termination System, and DJI's optional AP1 parachute adds an independent FTS link. Aircraft class is only one part of an operation: deployment planning still needs to cover the operating scenario, airspace, communication coverage, contingency procedures and required documentation.

Who is it for?

  • emergency services and Drone as First Responder programs,
  • industrial sites, ports and critical infrastructure security,
  • thermal inspections of power and solar assets,
  • repeated inspections of power lines, pipelines, mines and construction sites,
  • operations that need rapid redeployment without a manual battery change.

This system is excessive for occasional aerial photography. Its value appears when response time, repeatability, remote control and all-day availability are part of the mission.
